Abstract
This report describes the implementation and main results of the gillnet survey of spawning cod in Icelandic waters (SMN) carried out for the 31st time between 27 March and 24 April 2026. The report also presents biomass indices for the main fish species caught in the gillnet survey, along with information on the distribution of sharks, crabs, seabirds, and marine mammals.
The stock index of spawning cod around Iceland has remained high for about a decade and a half, and is this year very similar to last year. In Faxaflói, the biomass index is the third highest since the survey began. Cod aged 7–9 years is most common in the survey, and this year 7-year-old fish were the most common.
The condition of cod has improved in many areas compared to last year but remains below the the survey period average in most of them. The gutted weight and liver weight have declined in recent years in many regions, especially in the Southeast and the North. This decline in condition is possibly due to the reduced availability of capelin as food leading up to the spawning period.
The stock index of saithe declines significantly between years and is at an average level following a large increase last year. There was a major increase in saithe on Selvogsbankinn last year, which reverses this year, and the decline in the index can largely be attributed to that area, while changes in other areas were smaller.
Among the stock indices of other fish species, it is worth noting that the haddock index has been high for the past ten years, and the indices for ling, tusk, and halibut are the highest since the gillnet survey began. |
