Abstract
This report summarises the findings from the 2025 autumn acoustic survey of the Iceland-East Greenland-Jan Mayen (IEGJM) capelin stock, conducted jointly by Icelandic and Greenlandic research institutions. The survey was conducted from August 23 to September 22, 2025, using two research vessels, Tarajoq and Árni Friðriksson. The primary objective was to estimate the acoustic stock size and distribution of mature and immature capelin in Icelandic, East Greenland, and Jan Mayen waters. The survey also focused on collecting data on hydrography, phytoplankton, zooplankton distribution, and whale sightings. The survey design included systematic acoustic transects complemented by targeted pelagic trawl stations for biological sampling. The results indicate that maturing capelin were primarily observed along the East Greenlandic continental shelf and along the shelf edges in Denmark Strait and north of Iceland, extending north to 70°N. Immature capelin were found in greatest quantity along the southeastern coast of Greenland, and a mixed portion of the stock was found with maturing capelin nearshore close to and north of the opening of Kangertittivaq/Scoresby Sund. No capelin were found west of Jan Mayen or by the Kolbeinsey Ridge. The total number of capelin was 139 billion. The total biomass estimated was 1,209 thousand tonnes, of which about 419 thousand tonnes were maturing capelin (spawning stock biomass). A clear overlap was observed between humpback whale sightings and areas of high capelin density along the East Greenland shelf edge, as well as with capelin prey, the mesozooplankton, and krill. The findings from this survey provide valuable insights into the current status of the IEGJM capelin stock and contribute to the ongoing efforts to manage this important marine resource. |
