Stock assessment and advice for northern shrimp in Arnarfjörður and Ísafjarðardjúp

Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis)

In accordance with the MSY approach, the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute advises that the shrimp catch in Arnarfjörður in the 2026/2027 fishing year should not exceed 248 tonnes, and that shrimp fishing should not be permitted in Ísafjarðardjúp. The basis for the advice can be found here.

The shrimp stock index in Arnarfjörður has been relatively stable since 2018. Haddock was abundant in the area, and the haddock indices for 2020–2025 were the highest since 2011. Further information on the survey results and the fishery in Arnarfjörður is available here.

The shrimp stock index in Ísafjarðardjúp was low and below the defined reference point. Haddock indices have been high since 2004, and since 2020 they have been very high in a historical context.
