Demersal Division

Tannkrabbi

The Demersal division deals with organisms that live close to the seabed or even within it.  Research mainly focuses on changes in population growth and abundance, behaviour of marine resources and the interactions among various parts of the ecosystem, as well as the effects of human pressure on the demersal ecosystem. Research on habitat mapping, migration, feeding and fecundity of fish and invertebrates and investigations of community structures are all examples of the varied research conducted by the Demersal division.

Monitoring, stock assessment and advice is a large part of the work done each year by the division as many of Iceland’s most important stocks are demersal, including cod, haddock, redfish and shrimp.  Surveys for demersal fish and invertebrates are conducted annually, and biological information is collected from samples caught in trawls or by gillnets in standardized sets.  In recent years the use of underwater cameras has increased for monitoring exploitable stocks such as Nephrops and scallops.  Sampling from commercial catches is also an important part of the monitoring done by the division.

Statistical models are being constructed to describe ecosystem interactions among populations.  Such models can be used to predict various factors that can affect single stock assessments and advice.

In recent years there has been a growing concern about increased anthropogenic pressures on the ecosystem.  Research by the demersal division is increasingly focused on such issues by estimating rates of discarding, by-catch of birds and marine mammals and the effects of fishing gear on the benthos.
