A research survey investigating the seafloor and the organisms that inhabit it recently returned to port after 20 days at sea. Aboard the research vessel Thorunn Thordardottir, a team of five scientists, led by marine biologist Steinunn Hilma Ólafsdóttir, worked to explore the underwater world and characterize seafloor habitats and their associated biological communities.
Using cameras equipped with powerful lights and mounted on a tripod, the team conducted multiple dives. The survey produced approximately 80 hours of video footage and thousands of photographs, at depths ranging from 34 m to nearly 500 m, providing a valuable dataset for further analysis.
The survey is part of a larger project, Benthic Habitat Mapping, being carried out throughout Icelandic waters to improve our understanding of seafloor habitats around the country. This year's fieldwork focused on the continental shelf off Eastfjords, Northwest and North of Iceland.
All the photos on this page, showcasing the beauty of the seabed, were taken during the survey.
