Particapants in the Marine Guardian prjoect, both Icelandic and international partners.
MFRI is a key member of a new international consortium of research and industry partners called Marine Guardian. The project is funded through the European Horizon initiative and managed by Matis. The project uses a holistic approach to provide impact-driven solutions to reduce fisheries´ environmental impacts on marine species and habitats.
Within the project, MFRI leads Work Package 3 (WP3), as well as several technologies within both WP2 and WP3, which focuse on optimizing fishing practices, protecting vulnerable habitats and species , and improving data-driven decision-making at sea.
Smarter Fishing with Optigear
MFRI is aiding the development of Optigear, an advanced monitoring system designed to collect real-time data on trawl geometry, seabed contact, and vessel performance. In collaboration with Brim, Trackwell, and Hampiðjan, the project is testing hardware and software on commercial fishing vessels to support more efficient and environmentally friendly fishing. Optigear provides fishers with insights to optimize towing efficiency, reduce fuel use, and minimize seabed disturbance, contributing to both economic and climate goals.
Real-time Catch Monitoring with FishScanner
Another key innovation developed by Star-Oddi and MFRI in collaboration with Hampiðjan is the FishScanner, an AI-based tool that identifies fish species and size distribution as they enter the trawl. The system uses video and sensor data to provide real-time feedback, allowing fishers to avoid unwanted catches and support sustainable stock management. Trials on research and commercial vessels are underway to ensure seamless integration into everyday fishing operations.
From Data to Best Practices
Beyond technology development, MFRI is also leading efforts to produce best practice guidelines for handling bycaught species and reducing discard mortality. These guidelines will help fishers and managers apply practical measures to protect marine biodiversity and promote responsible fishing.
Through industry collaboration aimed at advancing monitoring tools, AI-driven decision support, and technologies intended to reduce unwanted catches, MarineGuardian is helping shape the future of sustainable fisheries management.
