The MFRI announces partnership in a four-year H2020 ECOTIP project that will investigate ecosystem tipping points and cascades in the Arctic Sea https://ecotip-arctic.eu/.

A decrease in Arctic Sea Ice and melting of the Greenland Ice sheet, and subsequent increase in freshwater inflow, can trigger a change in the biological system: an “ecosystem tipping cascade”. This can lead to an ecosystem regime shift triggering cascading effects on the marine food web and socio-economic systems.

An example of such a regime shift will be developed and illustrated with a capelin storyline where a shift in distribution and migration pattern has been observed in recent years. It is important to understand how the stock is responding to pressure from climate-related stressors.
