The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland is advertising for a two-year temporary position (scientist) to work on research regarding developing gear technologies to facilitate reductions in discard, seabead impacts, and carbon emissions to support the blue economy. The position is part of the EU Horizon funded grant Marine Guardian. The applicant will be expected to gather literature and perform reviews, facilitate meetings, coordinate data gathering among a wide variety of researchers, write and coordinate reports and work with various industry members regarding gear and technology development and innovation. The applicant will also be expected to be trained in social science methodology and ethics in order to conduct stakeholder workshops and work closely with the industry to co-produce fishing technology and operations knowledge. Travel is required for annual meetings or conferences, training, and to perform gear trials at sea.
Job requirements:
Master‘s degree or equivalent in biology, engineering, or natural resource management
3 years experience working directly with or within a marine fishing industry, preferably related to fishing gear or technology development
Proficient Icelandic
Proficient English
Desired qualifications:
Hands-on experience in gear technology and sustainability reporting
Competence in data analysis, data engineering or computer science
Experience at sea
