The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has released advice on fishing opportunities of widely distributed pelagic fish stocks, including Norwegian spring-spawning herring, blue whiting and Northeast-Atlantic mackerel.

Norwegian spring-spawning herring

ICES advises that when the agreed long-term management strategy is applied, catches in 2020 should be no more than 525 594 tonnes. The advice for the current year was 589 thousand tonnes meaning that there is a 11% decrease in the advice between the years. The reason for it is mainly related to decreasing stock size as a consequence of relatively poor recruitment for years. ICES estimates the total catches in the year 2019 to become 774 thousands tonnes, which exceeds the advised total allowable catch by 31%.

Information about the advice and its basis can be found here and more detailed information in the technical report of the ICES working group.

Mackerel

ICES advices that when the maximum sustainable yield approach is applied, catches in 2020 should be no more than 922 064 tonnes. The advice for the current year was 770 thousand tonnes which is a 20% increase in the advice between years. ICES estimates the total catches in the year 2019 will be 835 thousand tonnes, which exceed the advised total allowable catch by 9%.

Information about the advice and its basis can be found here and more detailed information in the technical report of the ICES working group.

Blue whiting

ICES advises that when the agreed long-term management strategy is applied, catches in 2020 should be no more than 1.162 million tonnes. The advice for the current year was similar or 1.144 million tonnes. ICES estimates the total catches in the year 2019 will be 1.444 million tonnes, which exceeds the advised total allowable catch by 26%.

Information about the advice and its basis can be found here and more detailed information in the technical report of the ICES working group.
