Beyond tipping points: safeguarding biodiversity in an ocean facing multiple stressors

MFRI´s next seminar will be held 16 October at 12.30. The speaker is Dr. Sam Dupont, a professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and the seminar is called: Beyond tipping points: safeguarding biodiversity in an ocean facing multiple stressors.

About the seminar

Beyond tipping points: safeguarding biodiversity in an ocean facing multiple stressors:
A healthy ocean is key for a healthy society, far beyond its provisioning services. However, it is currently under increasing pressure from over-exploitation, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change and ocean acidification, with far reaching consequences for human health.

While scientific evidence is piling up, implementation of meaningful actions is lagging behind, confirming that information is a poor driver of change. For example, management for multiple stressors still relies on ecotoxicological thinking focusing on threshold or tipping point, that may not be adapted to climate change and ocean acidification. During this seminar, we will discuss the limitations and associated risks of the current framework using ocean acidification as an example and explore alternatives.

Dr. Sam Dupont has led intensive scientific work at the Kristineberg research center and recently joined MFRI as a part time employee. He has published more than 300 scientific articles describing the results of research on the effects of ocean acidification and other stressors, and in recent years has placed increased emphasis on communicating knowledge to governments, the IPCC and other scientific committees internationally. He will work part-time at the Marine Research Institute for the next two years.

The seminar is open for everyone and held on-site at Fornubudir 5, Hafnarfjordur and online on Teams.
